Mondi has supported Angulas Aguinaga on its way to switch to recyclable paper-based packaging for its Krissia brand refrigerated surimi sticks. In this way, the goal of greatly reducing the amount of plastic used has been achieved. Surimi sticks were previously packed in a multi-material plastic solution. Thanks to the close collaboration with Mondi, Angulas Aguinaga and its Krissia brand are evolving to a secondary packaging that uses Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier paper. Mondi’s extensive experience in paper packaging allowed it to create a solution that was truly fit for purpose, protecting the refrigerated product and significantly reducing plastic – eliminating up to 20 tons of plastic every year.
Mondi FunctionalBarrier paper is manufactured from renewable and certified resources, is responsibly sourced and offers a number of advantages: the strong and very tear-resistant kraft base paper is completely transformed in the Mondi company to ensure the customized barrier protection of food and the sealing ability of packaging. The final packaging can be recycled in the existing paper recycling flows in Spain.
Jordi Gorchs, regional director for France and Southern Europe, Consumer Flexibles, Mondi, states: “By working closely with the Krissia team and studying the entire product journey, we have been able to ensure that surimi sticks are packed in recyclable packaging that supports the circular economy; keeping valuable materials in the circuit. We took the time to focus on the product needs first, before optimizing our FunctionalBarrier paper, to offer a responsible and recyclable replacement to the previous plastic alternative.”
Mikel Grande, director of marketing and innovation of Angulas Aguinaga, says: “We are committed to creating innovative solutions in the food industry that solve the real needs of consumers. In this context, the change of the packaging of our products to materials that come from renewable resources is an obligation: it is our responsibility to offer solutions to our consumers, whose preferences have changed towards paper packaging. This new solution significantly replaces unnecessary plastic, while ensuring the quality of our Krissia surimi sticks. We are very proud to be the first brand to market this type of paper-based packaging for refrigerated fish.”
