PACKAGING FIRM WINS NEW “GREEN” AWARD

Midland foil container manufacturer Nicholl Food Packaging has won a new award – for its “green” policies.

The company has achieved ISO 14001 certification after a rigorous inspection of environmental practices at its Aldridge headquarters.

The ISO 14001 international standard was introduced in 1996 to evaluate the environmental management systems of companies and organisations.

Nicholl Food Packaging, which has a workforce of 400 and turnover of £65 million, is the largest aluminium foil container manufacturer in Europe.

Nicholl, already an ISO 9001 accredited company, manufactures aluminium foil containers for the bakery, catering, fast food /ethnic take-away trade and institutional caterers.

The company’s green credentials include the training of all employees in environmental issues, the minimisation of material and energy wastage, controlled noise emissions, the promotion of recycling and the use of “clean” lubricants in production, which contain neither mineral hydrocarbons nor GMOs (genetically modified organisms).

Commercial Director Andrew Dent said: “Achieving this standard is another indication of the company’s determination to employ the highest standards in production and also contribute to a cleaner environment.

“As the largest manufacturer in the UK our customers expect us to pioneer these types of initiatives and ultimately it serves to raise standards throughout the industry.”
