Buckinghamshire manufacturer Nicholl Food Packaging has achieved certification against a new standard for food packaging materials.
The British Retail Consortium and Institute of Packaging Technical Standard establishes management procedures and standards to be used by companies supplying food packaging materials to retailers or food manufacturers.
The Chesham company – formerly known as the Ekco Group – joined the Nicholl stable last year when was it was acquired in a multi-million pound deal which made Nicholl the largest producer of aluminium foil containers in Europe.
Commercial director Andrew Dent said: “This is a truly remarkable achievement given the purchase of this business only 12 months ago and is a testament to the workforce and management involved in what has been an extremely demanding and very successful year.”
Nicholl’s food containers, all manufactured in aluminium, can be seen on the shelves of every major supermarket in Britain, including Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Sainsbury and Safeway.
They are used in the frozen, chilled, ready meal, and fresh food sections, along with bakery and meat products.
Nicholl’s Chesham factory, which employs around 155 people, joins the company’s other UK site – at Aldridge in the West Midlands in achieving the standard.
The £65 million turnover company became the first aluminium foil container manufacturer in Europe to win the BRC/IoP Standard for food packaging materials.
Nicholl, an ISO 9001 accredited company, manufactures aluminium foil containers for the bakery, catering, fast food /ethnic take-away trade and institutional caterers.
The company has specialist production facilities in the West Midlands, Derbyshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Saint Vincent de Mercuze, France, and Seilles in Belgium and a workforce of around 400.
